When we think about the business in composite industries, what would be the key factor to success?

 

Cost reduction of materials / process (machining and molding)?

Or, easy design practice to control composite materials?

 

If we need think about CFRP or very big size products, “Repair / Rework” should be very important business style in composites world in my opinion.

 

Considering one of the big advantages of composite materials, especially fiber reinforced plastics by carbon fiber,

long life should be very important viewpoint.

Even if material/process cost is higher than other materials like metals,

long life advantage would be “need-to-consider” point.

To achieve long life of products, repair or rework should be understood.

SHINMEI TOHOKU MACHINERY, group company of Shinmei Industry Co., Ltd., has developed new automated equipment for FRP scarf sanding prior to repair.

The purpose of the machining is to remove damaged area of composites.

After that, new composite material will be put and cured bonded on scarf / step shaped composites for repair.

 

Equipment summary is as below:

Size: 650 X 650 X 500 (L X W X H) [mm]

Weight: 40kg

Available curvature: > R800

Machining shape: Scarf + Step

 

This machine was designed to repair aircraft fuselage.

It can be clamped on the rounded surface like fuselage, and machining on the damaged area.

The machined shape is scarf and step.

The advantages of this machining are;

– Machining time reduction: maximum 67% machining time reduction (480min to 100min for 300 diameter machining)

– Full automated process: merit to dust work

 

 

 

This machine is planned to be released by end of this year.

 

Repair / Rework business is key to composite industry progress.

I hope this technology will be spread, and lead to stable repair / rework process.

I joined Aeromart Nagoya.

This meeting was focused on aeronautical industries and business meeting.

Suppliers and OEMs from many countries like UK, France, Germany, Canada, Morocco, Mexico, U.S., South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, China, Spain etc, were joined.

Main topics were metal machining and surface treatment, but some companies related to composite materials were also there.

I visited SHINMEI TOHOKU MACHINERY, introduced in this mail magazine.

Business meeting focusing on specific industries should be very reasonable and this type of meeting would be increased for the future.
